Have you ever stopped to think about how your daily routines and practices shape the love you share with your partner and your family? The connections we build, the moments we cherish, and the habits we nurture contribute to a legacy that lasts well beyond our own years. Here are three simple yet impactful practices that my wife and I have made our own to leave a legacy of love.

The Power of Praying Together

One of the cornerstones of our family tradition is praying before our meals. This practice may seem simple, but it carries profound significance. Taking a moment to express gratitude for what we have been given fosters a deep connection, not just with a higher power but also among ourselves. Each time we come together to pray, we pause to appreciate the abundance in our lives—both big and small. But the impact doesn’t stop with us. As our children, family and friends witness this practice, they learn the importance of gratitude and reflection, values they will likely carry into their future relationships.  An active practice of gratitude naturally creates more room for blessings to be received and magnified.

Embracing Our Chosen Family

Another tradition that has enriched our relationships is the way we reach out to and adopt a few individuals who may not have significant family close by or immediately available.. We invest time and resources into forming bonds with these special people and treat them, as if they are important members of our immediate family. Whether it’s offering a helping hand to them for projects they can’t complete on their own, including them in our traditional family holiday and celebrtory times, or simply sharing a regular meal with them in our home,, we demonstrate that love can extend far beyond traditional family ties. Our children see the depth of these relationships as they engage with others whom they consider family and refer to as their “adoptive grandparents.” They too are now part of this grand, divine economy that looks for opportunities to selflessly share a little bit more from their own well of love.

Going the Extra Mile

Finally, our family makes a conscious effort to go above and beyond in our relationships. Rather than merely fulfilling expectations, we aim to do more—whether it’s surprising a partner with coffee in bed or taking the time to help a friend in need. By stepping in when others might step back, we cultivate an atmosphere of trust and dependability. Our children see this modeled first-hand, learning that the way we treat others impacts our relationships profoundly. In turn, they carry this understanding into their future interactions, creating a ripple effect of kindness that extends beyond our immediate family.

Leaving a Legacy of Love

Families are the backbone of society, shaping how love is expressed and experienced in the world. The traditions we establish today do more than simply fill our days with meaning; they create a foundation for future generations. Thes three practices we cherish, (along with so many more) —including praying together, embracing our chosen family, and doing more than we have to in any situation—have made a lasting impact on our own relationship and the lives of those around us.
